We’re in the midst of a major literacy crisis in America. Nationwide, only 1 in 3 kids are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. There is nothing more essential to a child’s opportunities in life than the ability to read well, but in Oakland, 85% of Black and Latino/a elementary students are not reading at third grade reading levels. Children who do not read proficiently by third grade are 4x more likely to not receive a high school diploma than proficient readers.

Providing Nutritious Meals

NOURISHING FUTURES
To transform the school food system — where students often eat two or three meals a day — We are helping to support OUSD’s Central Kitchen, Education Center and Instructional Garden & Farm (The Center) in becoming fully operational with the goal of providing over 6 million healthy, scratched-cooked school meals every year to the district’s nearly 35,000 students and 85 schools.

MOBILE RESOURCES FOR OAKLAND
To provide continued support to the Oakland community and our school partners, we are continuing to utilize the Eat. Learn. Play. Bus as a mobile resource center to provide 25,000 nutritious meals and 100,000 culturally-affirming books annually to Oakland youth and their families. This work includes continuing to work with the Alameda County Community Food Bank and local Oakland restaurants to provide two million meals, produce and grocery staples to Oakland students and families experiencing hunger, including over the weekends and during the summer.

ADVOCATING FOR NATIONWIDE NUTRITION
We are continuing to fight hunger locally, while also using the power of our platform and the Currys’ voices to fight for state and federal nutrition programs that provide a lifeline for millions of kids and families. This year, Stephen and Ayesha were appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition – a federal advisory committee that aims to promote healthy, accessible eating and physical activity for all Americans, regardless of background or ability. Through their roles, we will elevate community voices and local innovations to a national stage and impact pro-kid policies to improve the lives of millions of kids across the country.
