Stephen and Ayesha Curry and Unanimous Media have a new film to focus on: a childhood literacy documentary titled Sentenced from co-directors Connor Martin and Mark Allen Johnson. Stephen Curry will narrate the film as well as produce while his wife, Ayesha Curry, who serves as CEO of Sweet July, will produce alongside Jeff Martin from It Matters and Children’s Literacy Project. Additional producers include Unanimous Media’s Erick Peyton, the film’s co-directors and Chris Helfrich, CEO of the Curry’s foundation Eat. Learn. Play. Brian Tetsuro Ivie and Kalyna Kutny will executive produce from Unanimous Media, with Tony Kriz and Jim Gulian serving as writers.

Sentenced is described as an “immersive and vulnerable exploration of the epidemic of childhood illiteracy through a series of braided character driven stories.” Those stories will be offered from diverse adults and children who have never learned to read.

NBA all-time 3-point leader and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and WNBA single-season 3-point record holder and New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu will compete in “Stephen vs. Sabrina,” the first-ever NBA vs. WNBA 3-Point Challenge, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis during State Farm® All-Star Saturday Night.

Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. will serve as the Official Benefiting Charity of the annual event. Through event partnerships, participant peer-to-peer fundraising, as well as staff & running community participation in Eat. Learn. Play. programs such as schoolyard remodels, the two organizations will work together to expand upon interrelated strategic objectives supporting Oakland students. Eat. Learn. Play. hosting Kids Fun Run on Saturday, March 16 as part of the Oakland Marathon weekend.

Eat. Learn. Play, along with Co-Founders Stephen and Ayesha Curry, hosted a surprise holiday celebration for the 11th Annual Christmas with the Currys—for this year’s capstone event Eat. Learn. Play. brought the joy of reading to every elementary school student (17,000) in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)—delivering beautiful gift boxes from Literati full of books to students at all 49 OUSD elementary schools. Each of the 17,000 holiday gift boxes included five books (85,000 books total) for each student.

When Eat. Learn. Play. launched in July 2019, we saw the immense need that existed in Oakland and set out to unlock the full potential of the kids in our community.

Oakland Athletic League (OAL) understands and advocates for the importance of sports in the lives of children. The nonprofit organization is a branch of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), working to expand students’ access to sports and physical activity.

OLC is a leader in Oakland’s literacy efforts, supporting schools, removing barriers to learning, and convening a diverse coalition of service providers. By working with OLC, these providers can be more effective, access opportunities to learn, and amplify issues impacting literacy rates.

Eat. Learn. Play. and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) are working together to transform the childhood experience for Oakland kids. As part of this work, Eat. Learn. Play. is developing a strong partnership with OUSD’s Central Kitchen, Education Center, and Instructional Garden & Farm (The Center) to help ensure all Oakland students have access to quality school meals throughout the year. 

This past July, Eat. Learn. Play. Co-founder Stephen Curry not only became the first American Century Championship player to hit a hole-in-one on the seventh hole but only the third active athlete, and the first Black player, to win the championship in the tournament's 34 years.

Steph and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation has made creating safe, engaging and creative recreation spaces a central part of its philosophy.

On Saturday, March 18, the Eat. Learn. Play. Kids Fun Run presented by Kaiser Permanente, hosted over 500 kids from toddlers to tweens, participated in races ranging from a quarter mile to a mile.

Oakland Literacy Coalition believes in a future where every Oakland child has the literacy skills necessary to thrive in school and life. Serving as an independent hub for Oakland’s literacy efforts, Oakland Literacy Coalition is amplifying the work of literacy organizations by resourcing the field with dollars, action grants, and capacity building.

In 2021, DonorsChoose and Eat. Learn. Play. teamed up with the goal of igniting a passion for reading in Oakland students. Eat. Learn. Play. committed $1 million to funding literacy requests from pre-K–8th grade Oakland teachers, and has just committed an additional $1 million to continue supporting teacher-led literacy projects in Oakland public schools.
