Stephen Curry Receives NAACP's Jackie Robinson Sports Award
Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been awarded the NAACP’s Jackie Robinson Sports Award.
This honor recognizes Curry’s work campaigning for social justice, supporting women’s causes and bringing awareness to coronavirus-related health protocols. For the first time in the organization’s history, the NAACP awarded two Jackie Robinson Sports Awards — one to Curry and another to the Women’s National Basketball Players Association.
The 52nd NAACP Image Awards will be broadcast on BET on March 27.
On its website, the NAACP said the Jackie Robinson Award “is presented to individuals in sports for their high achievement in athletics in addition to their contributions in the pursuit of social justice, civil rights and community involvement.” After an 18-year absence, the award returned in 2017 and was given to LeBron James.
Earlier winners included the Harlem Globetrotters, Anita DeFrantz, Jim Brown, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Sugar Ray Leonard, Eddie Robinson and Michael Jordan.
Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation has served more than 15 million meals to families in need throughout the East Bay. In the past year, he has appeared at the Democratic National Convention, campaigned to increase voter registration, hosted a video chat with infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, and launched a series of in-depth interviews dealing with the coronavirus and voting.
Curry also has spoken out numerous times against racial injustice and police brutality. On several occasions, he has been spotted attending protests against those issues in the Bay Area.
“He has a strong platform, and he utilizes it to the best of his ability,” Warriors guard Kelly Oubre Jr. said Wednesday. “He’s a great individual.”
